How custom orthotics are made at the lab

1. Start with making a plaster mold of your foot in my office. This mold is called a negative cast.

2. Your negative cast is sent to the lab.

3. The lab fills your cast with plaster and removes the original outer plaster, so now you have a positive cast. The positive cast is widened and includes any special modifications needed to an individual's needs.

4. Plastic is heated and molded to the positive cast.

5. The orthotics are trimmed to size and have corrective foam added to them.

6. A grinder is used to make the final shape and corrections.

7. The final orthotic is the image of the original cast providing the corrections needed for comfort and improved efficiency of walking.
